Hello, Dolly! is a 1964 musical with lyrics and music by Jerry Herman and a book by Michael Stewart, based on Thornton Wilder's 1938 farce The Merchant of Yonkers, which Wilder revised and retitled The Matchmaker in 1955. The musical follows the story of Dolly Gallagher Levi, a strong-willed matchmaker, as she travels to Yonkers, New York to find a match for the miserly "well-known unmarried half-a-millionaire" Horace Vandergelder.
The tracks were mostly recorded on December 3, 1963, and April 18, 1964, in New York City. It was released by Kapp Records in 1964 and became Armstrong's most commercially successful album.
The Cincinnati engagement starred MARY MARTIN as "Mrs. Dolly Levi Gallagher" and featured LORING SMITH, MARILYNN LOVELL, COCO RAMIREZ, JOHNNY BEECHER, BEVERLEE WEIR, MARK ALDEN, ROBERT HOCKNELL, JUDITH DRAKE, SKEDGE MILLER and CARLETON CARPENTER. Side Note: Beginning in April of 1965, MARY MARTIN crisscrossed the . and Canada in "Hello, Dolly!" for five months before taking the show across the Pacific. The production played briefly in Hawaii and then, starting on October 10th, 1965, played the war zone in South Vietnam before touring .
Mary Martin had that special ability to take a part and make it exclusively her own. The mention of her name brings to mind a particularly vivid set of images: Ensign Nellie Forbush washing that man right outta her hair, that other Dolly, Dolly Winslow-whose heart belongs to Daddy-shedding her furs, and Peter Pan teaching the Darling children to fly and to crow: er-er-er-errrh! Martin was considered for the role of Dolly after Merman had declined, and prior to Channing. Martin, like Merman however, had also turned it down. Carol Channing was leading the Broadway company in 1964, but Mary Martin would be taking it around the world. In that opening year of Hello, Dolly! on Broadway, Mary Martin and her husband, Richard Halliday, were spending more time at their home in Brazil. However, in 1965, she was persuaded to embark on a world tour of Dolly!
