Sunshine Boy collects alternate takes, cover songs and demos from what many believe to be Van Zandt's most productive period, culminating in 1972 with the release of two heralded albums: High, Low and In Between and The Late Great Townes Van Zandt. Disc one contains alternate takes of several compositions, such as his classic "Pancho and Lefty," which is stripped of the strings and mariachi horns that augmented the original, and "White Freight Liner Blues," which contains southern rock elements
The art of Townes Van Zandt reveals itself a little at a time. Every hearing brings forth something you can t believe you missed all the other times, or something that rings even truer today than back when. This is due to the fact that it is a great selection of songs, and even better, it is not overly produced. I will listen to any Townes album, and I enjoy every Townes album, but his albums have a tendency to be a little over produced. By 1972, Townes had five LPs on the streets, a son he hardly saw, an ex-wife, a murdered girlfriend, and a heroin habit. Living was painful to Townes,’ his ex-wife, Fran, told Robert Earl Hardy. didn’t know how to live in this world.

Worth, Texas-born Van Zandt, who died on New Year’s Day in 1997. The years of 1971 and 1972, from which these selections are culled, were part of a wonderfully genius period of time for the man who’s legend has become much greater in death than it was during his life, when his name managed to cut a formidable figure in only some circles. From 1968 through 1972, six studio albums yielded many of the songs that are now considered to be indispensable elements of the theoretical country songwriter’s handbook, especially south of Tennessee.
