Like the movie itself, the soundtrack to OLIVER & COUNTRY is an album of hits and misses. It includes the first Disney song written by Howard Ahsman, "Once Upon a Time in New York City", sung by Huey Lewis, and the upbeat ditty that has become a Billy Joel standard, "Why Should I Worry. Bette Midler has a divine voice, but her songs on the album are nothing extraordinary and the instrumental pieces are basically run of the mill.

The instrumental score for Oliver & Company was composed by . Redford, and the film's music was supervised by Carole Childs. The first song heard in the film, "Once Upon a Time in New York City", was co-written by lyricist Howard Ashman, who, with Alan Menken, would write the songs for the next three Disney films. Billy Joel, in addition to voicing Dodger, performed the character's song in the film.
The soundtrack features two original songs, Hawaiian Roller Coaster Ride and He Mele No Lilo, which were written by Mark Kealiʻi Hoʻomalu and composer Alan Silvestri. Also featured are songs by famous American performer Elvis Presley, as the character Lilo is a huge Elvis fan. Disney presented the idea of including Elvis' music in the film and it gradually became more and more interwoven into the story. When the film premiered, there was an invitation-only show the night before in Memphis with Disney putting on a luau at Graceland.
