The album is a complete track-for-track reimagining of Pink Floyd's seminal 1973 album The Dark Side of the Moon.

artists and what they gave back. Though the Lips always seemed more indebted to Syd Barrett-era Pink Floyd, they put their own stamp on Dark Side’s paranoia and moody. While the Lips recorded that album on their own, it’s still easy to hear how this album is symbiotic with Embryonic. The same wildness permeates these songs, giving them a feel that’s more primal than the original’s polished reflections.
Originally conceived for a New Year's Eve show, the Flaming Lips and guests Peaches and Henry Rollins cover the Pink Floyd classic. Like the prism on the iconic cover of Dark Side of the Moon, Pink Floyd's legacy can be refracted many different ways. For one, there's the different eras marked by different bandleaders, from Syd Barrett's storybook psychedelia to Roger Waters misanthropic art-rock to David Gilmour's inoffensive arena-filling stuff

And as artists like Radiohead and Flaming Lips (both of whom have been profoundly influenced by Dark Side) can attest, the album’s music and lyrics still hold up beautifully today. Here are 10 things you might not know about Dark Side of the Moon. Dark Side of the Moon was the first Pink Floyd album to feature Roger Waters as its sole lyricist. Floyd fans were first treated to Dark Side of the Moon in concert more than a year before the album was actually released. Though the lush textures and spacious arrangements of Dark Side of the Moon make it sound like a purely studio project, the band actually aired out all of the songs in concert – in the exact same sequence that they would appear on the album – more than a year before the album’s official release.
The album opens with punk icon/activist Henry Rollins reciting the interview snippets that begin the original Dark Side (he even provides the requisite maniacal laughter), but his straight-faced readings of these well-known phrases ( I’ve always been mad ) sound like bad community theater. When the group delves into Breathe, they recast the tune as an energetic Krautrock jam, but Wayne Coyne’s odd stop-start vocals don’t match the propulsive backing band. The absolute worst moment on The Flaming Lips and Stardeath and White Dwarfs with Henry Rollins and Peaches Doing the Dark Side of the Moon (yeah, that’s the full name of the album) is Money. The Lips turns the Dark Side’s biggest hit into a plodding, tuneless waltz with irritating vocoder vocals-it’s rare to hear a song sound so mechanical and cartoonishly dopey at the same time. Take a listen to it after the jump
