Seventh Wave was a British psychedelic and progressive rock duo formed in the mid-1970s. The band was formed by Ken Elliot (keyboards, vocals) and Kieran O'Connor (percussion), both of whom had been members of earlier progressive rock groups, Second Hand and Chillum. Joined by other musicians, including Pete Lemer, Hugh Banton (organist of Van der Graaf Generator), Steve Cook, Brian Gould, Tony Elliott, Pepi Lemer, Rob Elliott, for their second album, Psi-Fi (1975), the band enjoyed a brief success, but broke up after the USA tour to promote that album. Kieran O'Connor continued to perform in blues-rock bands, but died in the 1980s. Ken Elliot went on to write the theme tunes to ITV's lunchtime news bulletin First Report and BBC2's Out of Court. A leap forward from their debut, this album shows the duo taking on extended song structures and a more varied and much improved vocal style. At times the material sounds like a precursor to the Buggles, as in the slick synths and harmonized vocals of the opening track, "Return to Foreverland. Their better material comes late in the album, though, with Elliot's writhing, serpentine sibilance in "Astral Animal," and the bubbling synth and Spanish percussion of the instrumental "El Tooto.
Unlike the previous Seventh Wave album, Psi-Fi saw keyboard player, vocalist Ken Elliott and percussionist Kieran O’Connor were joined in the studio by such guests as keyboard player HUGH BANTON (of Van Der Graaf Generator), vocalists ROB ELLIOTT and PEPI LEMER and bass guitarist STEVE COOK. Psi-Fi was another ground-breaking album and was critically acclaimed upon its release, being very much ahead of its time, proving inspirational to a new generation of musicians.
