Cannonball Adderley & Nancy Wilson. Softly, 'Round Midnight. This Is Jazz, Vol. 10: Weather Report.
This is an album I would describe as multi-sensory and completely transportive. There’s boisterous and joyful percussion throughout, and some tasteful solos by Adderley, but for me what makes this record stand out are the memorable refrains and motifs. Adderley’s opening lead on Khatsana, on my first listen, made me think I had heard it a hundred times before; it’s narrative in such a familiar way.

Although the cover proclaims that this is the Cannonball Adderly Quintet, what we really have here is Cannonball fronting a large African flavored percussion section and a Nelson Riddle influenced big band. Cannonball’s brother Nat is also on hand for some hot cornet playing
