In 1850 he became a travelling virtuoso, with his brother Joseph, a distinguished pianist. The tsar appointed him solo violinist in 1860, and taught from 1862-1867. In 1874 he was appointed to succeed Vieuxtemps as professor in the Brussels Conservatoire.
