Unfortunately, Places Like This more resembles that messy room than the barely contained creativity of In Case We Die, which I guess makes me the angry Dad with the sore foot in this scenario. It's no joy to say that this third full-length from AiH often misses the mark; the band clearly has a surplus of ideas and energy, which is the opposite problem to the majority of indie mopesters churning out the same album over and over again. They may all be errors borne of excess enthusiasm, but nonetheless they're stylistic choices unlikely to endear Architecture in Helsinki to anyone over the age of four. Elsewhere, the band's unorthodox arrangements lead to dead-ends more than usual. While the mid-song detours may be AiH's signature, they remain a risky move, and Places Like This spotlights a couple moments where it backfires on the band.

Unoriginal, haphazardly thrown together and lacking most of what could make it the least bit enjoyable, Places Like This just proves that Architecture in Helsinki is a one trick pony.
Australian indie-pop outfit Architecture in Helsinki are known for their quirky, upbeat music, best exhibited in 2005’s In Case We Die, but Places Like This is odd even by their standards. Most songs are unable to follow an established song structure for more than 30 seconds; every time it feels like the perfect spot for a chorus, the music takes a left turn into a slow, spacey bridge or an instrumental keyboard interlude that sounds like something from a video game. From Wobble Up to Just Like That, he finds no shortage of ways to tell women how to sit on his dick.
Places Like This brings the band truly center stage, the follow up to their breakthrough album. At their cores, the songs on the album are simply written pop songs. Standard chord progressions with standard beats. The problem is more the musicianship of the band. Like It or Not demonstrates the issues that plague the album well. It begins with trumpet and childish wah-wah vocals. It’s hard to criticize Architecture in Helsinki for this album because everything they do is obviously intentional. No one can be serious about those voices or the cheesy feel of the music. Still, the musicianship is never great, sometimes dreadful.
Architecture in Helsinki began playing in 2000, crafting a mix of indie, electronic, and pop that they recorded and occasionally performed live. The collective began recording its debut album, Fingers Crossed, in 2002 in a variety of places ranging from beach houses to proper studios; Bar/None released the album in spring 2004. Following a hectic year of touring and recording, the group turned around another album, In Case We Die, in 2005.
