After James's band won the competition, Jones signed James to an album deal with Mercury Records In New York City, James worked as an arranger and was hired as piano accompanist for jazz singer Sarah Vaughn. Immediately thereafter, he cut a disco version of the Theme to Star Trek: The Motion Picture a 45 of which was included with the soundtrack LP and recorded the album Touchdown (Tappan Zee, 1978). Among the songs on the album was "Angela", the theme song for the TV show Taxi.

This here is my tiring, incomplete, and extremely rough transcription of the main theme from Star Trek: The Motion Picture. I started this back in the beginning of September because: 1) I like Star Trek! Why not? 2) I just found out about and downloaded Musescore. I needed something to learn the programs functions. 3) I have yet to see it transcrib. 3) I have yet to see it transcribed nor can find the original score anywhere. I've seen midi and lead sheets of the theme but didn't like them, especially how no one play the intro correctly. 4) I'm a closet music major, so it helps me learn more about writing for other instruments (especially strings and their ridiculous runs) It's the iconic main theme.
The main title was recycled for the TV show Star Trek The Next Generation and some of the other Star Trek movies. Goldsmith wrote music for the film as it was still being filmed! He also had to modify several music cues. The Star Trek The Motion Picture theme music took ten days to compose! The original "theme" was rejected for sounding too much like "naval ships" and "Western music". It's funny, but I never realized that this expanded album existed until recently. The track I've always most wanted to own is next to the last track where the Enterprise is majestically floating away from us then warping away in a flash of color and light. That musical cue still excites me when I hear it!
