Flamin' Groovies is an American rock music band that started in San Francisco in 1965, led by Roy Loney and Cyril Jordan. After the Groovies released three albums, Loney left the band in 1971. He was replaced as co-leader by Chris Wilson, and the band's emphasis shifted more toward British Invasion power pop. The band signed to United Artists Records in 1972, releasing just three more singles until 1976.
The Flamin Groovies – Sneakers. Label: A Snazz Recording – R-2371. Format: Vinyl, LP, 10", Mini-Album. Original 10" debut self-released by The Flamin' Groovies in 1968.
Remastered from an original 10-inch-album. Matrix, Runout (Runout Side A, Etched): MR 12141 A CD.
The Sneakers/Roy Loney led Flamin’ Groovies were a totally different animal. They resided in San Fransisco and played a greasy old fashioned brand of rock n roll that was also influenced by monster British Invasion bands such as the The Who, Rolling Stones and Kinks (started circa 1965/66). The Groovies played the same psychedelic ballrooms as Jefferson Airplane and the Grateful Dead, thus making them hopelessly out of step with the acid daze. This 10 inch album was the first of four releases from the Roy Loney era Groovies. During this period their lineup also included Cyril Jordan, Danny Mihm, Tim Lynch and George Alexander. Although they would release two bonafide classics in Flamingo and Teenage Head, Sneakers remains their most honest, fun record to date. It was a great album that didn't sell, but did get them dropped from Epic. Quickly signing with Kama Sutra, the Groovies closed the '60s and started the '70s with two terrific records (Flamingo and Teenage Head), but public apathy and the increasingly tempestuous relationship between Jordan and Loney led to the latter's departure for a solo career in 1971. A combination of the Sneakers indie 10" from 1968 and ten tracks from a 1968 gig at a San Francisco club. The live material had previously been issued on the French import Flamin' Groovies '68 in the mid-'80s. The studio tracks from Sneakers decidedly outshine the looser, more indulgent live takes, several of which duplicate Sneakers material. It's the definitive document of their pre-major label days, though, when they fused garage rock with blues, psychedelia, and the Lovin' Spoonful, complete with historical liner notes.
