Charlie Parker on Dial: The Complete Sessions is a 1993 four-disc box set collecting jazz saxophonist and composer Charlie Parker's 1940s recordings for Dial Records. The box set, released by the English label Spotlite Records, assembled into a single package the multi-volume compilation albums the label had released by Spotlite on vinyl in the 1970s under the series title Charlie Parker on Dial. The box set has been critically well received.
Complex Intense Passionate Sophisticated Boisterous Cerebral Exuberant Literate. The fifth of six LPs in this valuable series mostly features the great altoist Charlie Parker with his quintet on November 4, 1947 performing "Bird Feathers,"," "Scrapple from the Apple," "My Old Flame," "Out of Nowhere," and "Don't Blame M. These three-minute gems (including four alternate takes) have concise solos from Bird, trumpeter Miles Davis, and pianist Duke Jordan, along with suitable backup from bassist Tommy Potter and drummer Max Roach.
Most of the songs are bop classics– Bloomdido, two cuts of An Oscar for Treadwell, two of Mohawk, three of a tune I didn’t know before, Leapfrog, and two of Relaxin’ with Lee, along with an unsentimental take of the standard, My Melancholy Baby . Absolutely an essential collection of Charlie Parker's music. Inclusive of his best collaborations. The 5-CD collection has a pristine audio quality that best reveals the full Parker vibe and sound. 5 people found this helpful.
